Movie Scene

In this scene from "V for Vendetta" V injected poison to the doctor while she was sleeping, giving her a painless death. Everything this scene presented represented death itself. V represented as death or the grim reaper, claiming lives of others. Dr. Surridge (the lady in the scene) injected prisoners of a potent virus and saw that the outcome of her actions caused many to suffer in which she regrets and tries to fix it. However, despite her actions to make it right, V still takes her life but does it in almost a loving way. He doesn't stab and make her feel pain like he does with others because she showed regret and tried to make up for her actions. He also, shows a point that death is "fair", by taking the lives of everyone that contributed to the country's destruction, he shows this by taking Dr.Surridge life even though she showed remorse. He still has to take her life in order to show that death treat people equally without favouritism or discrimination, that death waits for no one and would all come one day. The lighting created a rich image, deep shadows making it a bit uneasy. However, the music played at the background helped created a touching mood and helped represent her death making it calm and tranquil. The red rose represent many things such as love, respect and a long time ago politics. The rose symbolizes what V fights for and his revenge, it also represent what the Dr. Surridge feel for the victims as a way to find redemption.

Museum of Moving Image

During my trip to the Museum of Moving Images my group experienced many interesting demos. Our tour guide took us to a recording studio which we participated in voice acting. We watch a clip from the movie of School of Rock, where the teacher makes the class pledge to his rules.  Then we watch the same clip but this time we read the lines and voice act in it. After hearing our results we realize that voice acting is something difficult to do.  The next demo, our tour guide took us to a room where she did a presentation on sound effects. She made us close our eyes to hear sounds that are being played one by one and guess what the sound was, which was the movie Titanic. We realize certain sounds being made are something we didn't expect. For example, when the pillar in the ship was falling they used an elephant sound or when the strings were breaking it has sounds of bullets being shot. This taught us that sounds can stimulate certain emotion from us and that without sound the movie can be pretty funny despite it’s a dramatic scene. I never realize that these sounds being made in movie is something that can be made from everyday objects and that the people making these sounds are creative in the work they do. Our tour guide pound how sound, animation, basically media in general is being made by these three elements; speed, sequence of images, and moment of rest.

What I Hear

I usually adventure out in the city during my spare time, and although there are many different types of noises out there I tend to ignore them and listen to my own type of sounds such as music.

I decided to turn off my music and take off my headphones as I listen carefully to my surroundings. It was around 5 after school, I decided to sit at  a park bench that was nearby. There were many noises but one that was overwhelming was vehicles. Vehicles such as cars or buses have this unique screeching sound when they press the brakes. Often they honk probably due to being impatient or someone not paying attention on the streets. On the side I can hear bells ringing a unique trait coming from bicycle probably ringing for the same reasons for the cars. These sounds are sound signals because they attract attention, sometimes intentionally and occupy a good amount of my attention unless I focus on something else.

A unique and comforting sound to me is the bell ringing from the church. It’s comforting to me because it has a distinctive noise and usually a rare sound to me because I don’t often hear it. I would consider this a soundmark because I believe the bell ringing from the church has a special meaning to it that many faithful followers would listen to. There’s something about that noise that consumes you, it feels like a cleansing experience especially when you close your eyes to it.

Some keynotes I hear would be birds chirping indicating that it’s still early. I would hear some horses hooves clacking on the street which is unique to the city and indicates where I am. I would hear the shuffling of leaves and the wind blowing. I love this type of noise because it's a sign of a change in season.

Artist Statement

My goal as a filmmaker is to create works to show others that as a human being, we really aren’t that much different. I want to produce videos showing the bright side of life. As an abc (American born Chinese) child I went through many obstacles such as bullying, race, poverty and gender issues. There are times where I want to give up in life however, I want to move forward and find the meaning in life. What inspired me to do this is, also ironic at the same time. Video games are the source that inspired me to move forward and yet the one where I want to run to when I can’t face reality. It touches upon politics, family, race, religion, so many subjects you can think of. It really makes one think about the choices one can make and can help realize the situation that’s happening in the world. I love how video games can let you enjoy playing, allowing you to do things that you wouldn’t be able to do in reality. What I want to do with my work is to let people know the situation that is happening around them and giving them options to do something about it. Also, to show that people have the power to do something as well to show that life can be fun if you want it to be. When I make a video I want it to be fun and have an impact on people. Basically I see life as a video game, you only got one life. Do what you can with it.
